pin—up其实主要指“美女海报”
从20世纪20年代开始，在美国流行手绘的美女招贴画、宣传画、电影海报之类，因为常被人钉在墙上，就得名“pin-up”（PIN的意思就是大头针、钉子之类）。
这些美女画像大致盛行了40年光景，以至于该词有了“迷人的”、“有魅力的”这样的词义。一张有美女画像的月历可以称为“a pin-up calendar”，一个搔首弄姿装娇作媚的姿势可以称为“a pin-up pose”，甚至一个小帅哥，也可以被称为“a pin-up boy”了。
而所谓的pin—up美术师，可以理解成类似的“插画师”。知道插画 是什么吧？插画师就是专门画插画的

Gil Elvgren (March 15, 1914 – February 29, 1980), born Gilette Elvgren, was an American painter of pin-up girls, advertising and illustration. Elvgren lived in various locations, and was active from the 1930s to 1970s. Today he is best known for his pin-up paintings for Brown & Bigelow. Elvgren studied at the American Academy of Art.
Elvgren was one of the most important pin-up and glamour artists of the twentieth century. In addition, he was a classical American illustrator. He was a master of portraying the all-American ideal feminine, but he wasn't limited to the calendar pin-up industry. He was strongly influenced by the early "pretty girl" illustrators, such as Charles Dana Gibson, Andrew Loomis, and Howard Chandler Christy. Other influences included the Brandywine School founded by Howard Pyle.
Elvgren was a commercial success. His clients ranged from Brown and Bigelow and Coca-Cola to General Electric and Sealy Mattress Company. In addition, during the 1940s and 1950s he illustrated stories for a host of magazines, such as The Saturday Evening Post and Good Housekeeping.
